The Role of Motives in Honest Competition

Honest Competition

In last week's Fist Bump, we discussed MOTIVES, the "WHY," and how to challenge ourselves with both words daily. We hope that got you thinking, and at least a few of you did because we had some great discussion and commentary with a few of you last week.

One topic we discussed was "Competition," and we stated, "Do not get confused. We are not discussing our motives when engaging in legitimate competitive situations (sports and business). Our focus and motive is to play to win." This statement could be accurate with context. We are both competitive guys in business and sports; a few of you might also be.

But let's be clear: when competing, we both emphasize playing by the rules and taking the high road. In business, we can't stress enough that we should be truthful with customers, talk respectfully about our competition, and compete fairly in the marketplace. As a Christian, NO EXCEPTIONS. Like sports, we represent Christ out there, either as a player, coach, or fan; let's represent HIM well!

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for human masters" Colossians 3:23
"Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor's crown except by competing according to the rules." 2 Timothy 2:5

This is where the "rubber meets the road" guys! Are we being truthful about our motives in business? Are we putting our business partners', employees', and customers' interests ahead of our own? Do we talk favorably towards our opponents, either in business or sports? Given we are working for the LORD, what type of annual evaluation would he give us…be honest, guys!

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit; rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4

We also mentioned the word "slothful," which we would not like to associate with each other. Interestingly, we learned more this week about the Greek word "Acedia," often translated to "sloth." Acedia is a life driven by the cost-benefit analysis of "WHATS IN IT FOR ME"? So, maybe we don't consider ourselves lazy. Perhaps we are hard-charging, accomplished, and have gained power and influence. And maybe we could still be demonstrating sloth? Hmm, that certainly causes us to think a bit deeper!

Guys, whether in our marriage, business, sports, friendships, or any relationship, let's ask ourselves: Are we consistently thinking about "What's in it for me? " Or are we putting others ahead of ourselves and working for the LORD?

We pray this morning for each of you guys that God will meet you where you are. Maybe this week, he will lead us to opportunities to lift and bless others. We appreciate you all.

Hope Community Drop Off

PS: We want to thank all the guys who brought items in for the Hope Community Center. We had an overwhelming response and were able to deliver a lot of much-needed supplies for the families. If you are interested, here is more information about what they do: hope-community-facts.pdf.
