Freedom, Grace, and Words That Build

freedom, grace and words that build

We hope each of you enjoyed a long Fourth of July holiday weekend and had some summer “chill time” with your family and friends. Thinking back, summer fun and adventures offer many great memories. We reflected on the value of our freedom in this country and the freedom offered through what Jesus did for us on the Cross.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery” Galatians 5:1

As we look around the world today, many never take these freedoms for granted. As we mentioned last week, we have been diving into the book of 2 Timothy.  Paul offers so much wisdom to Timothy and us in this book.  This verse caught our attention this week.

“Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly” 2 Timothy 2:16

Once again, Paul cuts right to the chase. We do not know about each of you, but we can get caught up in “godless chatter” on various occasions. Those times, we wish we could erase what we said or thought more about how we reacted to someone. We are too quick to respond and fail to realize the power of our words to others.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what helps build others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  Ephesians 4:29

Think about your wife and kids. Are there times when you wish you could take those words you said back? Think about your friends, and when you are “hanging with the guys,” can you get caught up in godless chatter? We can! We know none of us are perfect, and we all fall short, but remembering how our words can impact others is important to keep front and center. A reminder we should put on our mirror to see each morning before we head out for the day. Try this verse on your mirror this week.

“Those who guard their mouths, and their tongues keep themselves from calamity” Proverbs 21:23

In your prayer time, never hesitate to ask God for help. He knows us and understands our challenges more than we ever realize. He knows we are not perfect.  He knows we struggle with sin every day. He loves and wants to walk through life with YOU, knowing we are broken men.

“He saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his purposes and GRACE.  This GRACE given to us before the beginning of time” 2 Timothy 1:9

May we all celebrate the GRACE of God! How are you doing on the Discovering Your Life’s Purpose challenge we talked about at our June 4th event? We are 30+ days into it. We have heard from some of you that it impacts us. It is GREAT to hear that. Even if you did not start, it is never too late! Give it a shot.
