Happy Father’s Day to all of you dads. Thanks for everything you do; it’s worth it!
We have been transitioning into studying Romans this past week, as well as Paul’s letter to the Roman church. The Romans dealt with so many good lessons and teachings that are still applicable today! I love how Paul shoots right through it and just says it how it is! Romans 12, in particular, caught our eye this week, another chapter with many highlights. It begins by referencing our lives as a living sacrifice:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” Romans 12:1
How well are we doing at this one, guys? What does offering our bodies as a “living sacrifice” to God really mean? Paul continues with some good advice, it starts with HUMILITY!
“For by the grace given me, I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, In accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you” Romans 12:3
That is so true, guys; humility is always involved when we think about sacrifice. Jesus set the ultimate example here, knowing he was a KING, but allowing insult, pain, and suffering on the cross, as a LIVING sacrifice for the US and ultimately leading to death on the cross! For US guys, think about that! Paul continues to talk about using our gifts for others in the body of Christ.
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is showing mercy do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:6
Think about it, what are our gifts…and HOW are we putting them into action? How are we using our TIME, TALENTS, and TREASURE for the glory of our Lord and Savior? Paul brings it home in verses 9 and 10 of chapter 12, titled “LOVE IN ACTION.”
“Be devoted to one another in love, Honor one another above yourselves” Romans 12:10
Just like being a good dad, loving others, using our gifts, being generous with our time, talent, and treasure…it takes consistent and intentional WORK. And with a mentality of offering ourselves as a “living sacrifice,” all for the glory of our God!
As we go into this week, let’s really think about these verses in our lives. Take 10 minutes, read Romans 12, and reflect on what the Holy Spirit is speaking to YOU. This morning, we are praying for each of you and in thanksgiving for the roles that each of you play in serving, teaching, encouraging, and leading in your lives. Thanks for all each of you do for God’s Kingdom!
Also, thanks to those guys who have shared their commitment to reading “The Purpose Driven Life.” We would love to hear from you if you decide to take the challenge!
