Four Words That Can Change Everything

We had a great evening with Michael Wozniak recently and shared his story of adventure and faith that began with four simple words: “Because you say so.”

Michael told how saying yes to an overseas travel opportunity led him to a once-in-a-lifetime experience working with the NBA and the Olympic Basketball Dream Team. Along the way, he learned lessons about listening—and obeying—God’s voice, even when it didn’t all make sense at the time.

He drew from the story in Luke 5, when Simon Peter, after a long, unproductive night of fishing, responds to Jesus’ instruction to go out again:

“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”— Luke 5:5

It’s a question that’s been on our minds since that night: What is God asking us to do “because He said so”?

Michael also gave us a great picture of what obedience looks like: playing tug-of-war with God. So often we’re pulling hard for what we want—career success, control, comfort—while God is simply holding the other end of the rope, waiting for us to let go and trust Him.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”— Proverbs 3:5-6

As men, we like to fix things. We want to lead. But maybe what God is really calling us to do is let go of the rope and let Him lead instead.

This morning, we’re praying for you—wherever you are in life—that God would provide, protect, and guide you to respond with those same four words:
