Ordinary Men Called to Extraordinary Faith

The Christmas Story

Do you remember hearing the Christmas story as a kid?

Mary and Joseph.

A baby born in a manger.

Wise men following a star.

It felt simple. Familiar. Almost expected.

As adults, when we slow down and really think about it, the story is anything but ordinary. God chose Mary, a young, ordinary teenage girl, to carry the Savior of the world. Jesus entered humanity not through power or prestige, but through humility. He was raised by a carpenter. He lived quietly for many years. No headlines. No fanfare.

God could have chosen a very different entrance. One that grabbed attention and demanded authority. Instead, He chose the quiet faithfulness of ordinary people. We were reminded this past week how often Scripture shows God working this way. Ordinary people. Extraordinary purpose.

When the angel appeared to Mary, she was understandably confused. Probably overwhelmed. Maybe even afraid. Yet her response was simple and faithful:

“I am the Lord’s servant, may your word to me be fulfilled.” Luke 1:38

That response invites a question for all of us. How do we respond when God nudges us? Do we hesitate because we feel unqualified? Too busy?Too distracted?

The enemy is quick to offer reasons to stay put. God invites us to step forward.

Look at the men Jesus chose as His disciples. Fishermen. A tax collector. Men with tempers, doubts, fears, and failures. No impressive resumes. No positions of influence.

Peter denied Jesus three times. Jesus knew it would happen and still prayed for him.

“But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:32

John was once aggressive and reactive. Over time, he became known as a man shaped by love.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.” 1 John 4:7

These were real men. Men like us. And God used them in incredible ways.

As we move deeper into the Christmas season, take a moment to reflect. God entered the world quietly, through obedience and trust. Each of us has an opportunity to reflect that same spirit.

What is one small act of faithfulness you can step into this week?

We are grateful for you and the way you continue to show up.

Have a blessed week.
