Whole Heart Over Half Heart

WTTB

This past Saturday, a group of us gathered for Walk Thru the Bible, and it turned out to be more than just a refresher on the Old Testament. It was engaging, fun, and surprisingly convicting. Huge thanks to Terry and Michael for leading us so well, and to Ada Bible for opening their doors.

One of the unexpected gifts of the day was how clearly the Old Testament story came together. It reminded us where we’ve been, why it matters, and how God has been working from the very beginning. It also stirred a desire in many of us to keep going and dig deeper.

About halfway through the day, while walking through Judges, we were reminded of this line: “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” That sentence could easily describe the world we live in today.

It raises an uncomfortable but necessary question: are we doing what’s right in God’s eyes, or what simply feels right in our own?

“A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.” Proverbs 21:2

As we moved through the Old Testament, we saw plenty of examples of men missing the mark. And while it’s tempting to judge those moments from a distance, Saturday reminded us that God has always been focused on the heart behind the actions.

We even learned it through simple motions that stuck with us:Saul—no heart.David—whole heart.Solomon—half heart.

Samuel’s words to Saul drive the point home:

“The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.”

Life today is full. Loud. Busy. It’s easy to drift into a rhythm where most of our energy goes toward what benefits us—our success, our goals, our comfort.

This week, let’s slow down long enough to ask a better question. Not just “Is this right for me?” but “Is this right in God’s eyes?”

God has a plan for each of us, Gents. He always has.
